Upgrade to Windows 10 for free now - or pay the price later

If you’ve been thinking about upgrading to Windows 10, now is the time. Microsoft has confirmed its commitment to the July 29, 2016 cutoff date for offering a Windows 10 upgrade for free to Windows 7, Windows 8, and Windows 8.1 users. After that date you will need to purchase a copy of Windows 10 in order to get the upgrade.

Why should you upgrade?

There are a number of great reasons to take advantage of this free upgrade. The main reason? Right now it’s free.

A downloadable copy of Windows 10 Pro edition, the business version of the operating system, costs $199.99 when purchased directly from Microsoft.

So, if you are thinking about upgrading to Windows 10, it makes sense to pull the trigger now. Otherwise, prepare to shell out a fair chunk of change to upgrade after July 29th.

The second reason to upgrade? Windows 10 is a great operating system. Microsoft has taken what it learned from Windows 8 and crafted a superior operating system that takes advantage of a brand new browser, better multitasking capabilities, and a great personal assistant in Cortana.

Finally, Windows 10 offers enhanced security. Back in January 2015, Microsoft ended primary support for the consumer version of their widely used operating system, Windows 7 and will end support for enterprise users in 2020. This means that beginning in January 2020, they will no longer provide automatic fixes, updates (like important security updates), or online technical assistance for any machines using Windows 7.

Behind the scenes, Microsoft has changed the way that it releases operating systems with its release of Windows 10. Instead of major releases, Microsoft has switched over to a system by which you receive regular, smaller releases that constantly improve upon the system you already own. At the same time, Windows 7, Windows 8, and Windows 8.1 will quietly end support.

Long story short: Why not take advantage of the upgrade to Windows 10 while it’s free, rather than waiting to pay for it when you’re forced to make the switch? It’s a great system. I wouldn’t go back to an older version of Windows if I were given the choice.

How do you upgrade?

First, make sure your PC is plugged into a power source and close down all open programs. Once all programs are closed, head to this page and click the Upgrade now button.

Once the upgrade file downloads, open it up and follow the instructions.

Before you upgrade

Before you take the plunge into Windows 10, consider this:

Are your files backed up? The upgrade should not delete any files you have saved, but it’s always a good idea to back up your files to OneDrive or another storage device before performing a system update this massive to guarantee their security.

Is it the middle of the workday? The download itself can take some time depending on your internet connection, and you can let it download in the background while you work. However, once you begin the installation, you won’t be able to use your computer for at least an hour while the upgrade takes place. It’s best to wait to start the update until a time when you won’t need to use your computer for a few hours. I recommend starting the update over a weekend or at the end of a work day.
